Glossary

The words Trusty Track uses, in alphabetical order.

Auto-advance — a toggle on the race screen. When on, the screen moves to the next heat by itself ten seconds after results are recorded.

Balanced round — a round where the first heats are random and later heats match cars that are doing about as well, so more children get a heat they can win. See Round styles.

Car — the built-in word for what a racer's entry is called. A pack can rename it — "Rocket" for a Space Derby, "Boat" for a Raingutter Regatta — and pick which of three pictures goes with it; see the words on screen.

Car number — the number on the car, called out at the track and printed on everything. How numbers are handed out is a race setting; see Race and track settings.

Championship round — a round whose racers are picked from results rather than from the roster: the fastest overall, the fastest from each den, the top finishers of another round, or the slowest cars. See Championship rounds.

Check-in — marking a car as inspected and cleared to race. Only checked-in cars are put into heats.

Check-in code — a printed QR code, one per racer, that opens their check-in form when scanned. See Printed documents.

Den — a group within the race (Lions, Tigers, Wolves…). Used for den-only rounds, per-den championships, car number ranges, and the den tables on printed results. "Den" is the built-in word for this — a pack can rename it, and anything else on screen, to fit a different kind of race; see the words on screen.

Display — any screen showing the Live page: a projector, a TV, a tablet on the wall. Displays need no PIN and cannot change anything. See Audience display views.

Elimination round — a round where a car is out after too many losses and the last car left wins. See Round styles.

Fake timer — a pretend timer that makes up finishing times, for practice and for trying the software out. Not for recording a real race with no hardware — see No timer for that. See the Fake Timer guide.

Free race — a heat that runs on the timer and shows on the audience display but counts for nothing. See the Free Race guide.

Heat — one race down the track: a handful of cars, one per lane, ten to thirty seconds.

Heat sheet — the schedule on paper, with an empty column to write results into. See Printed documents.

Lane — one slot on the track. Lanes are not equal — small differences in the track make some faster — which is why the default round style gives every car a turn in every lane.

Line-up — who is in a round's heats. A championship round's line-up fills itself in from results; Line-up out of date on the schedule means those results have since changed. See Championship rounds.

Master running order — an opt-in race setting that interleaves every den's heats into one running order instead of a block per den, so the track need not idle while the next den's cars are staged. Off by default. See Running order across groups.

Operator — the person running the race, on the device that holds the operator PIN (if one is set). See Roles and permissions.

Pit pass — a lanyard-sized printed card with the racer's photo, name, den, and car. See Printed documents.

Points — the scoring choice for racing without a timer: finishing places added up, lowest total wins. See No timer for setting a track up to race this way, and Scoring for the rules.

Qualifying round — a round the whole roster races. The overall standings are built from these, and championship rounds pick their racers from them.

Round — a set of heats. A qualifying round covers everyone; a championship round covers the cars that qualified for it.

Runs per lane — how many times each car takes each lane in a round. One is the default; more produces fairer averages and takes longer.

Skipped heat — a heat passed over without racing, usually because every car in it scratched. See Changes in the middle of a race.

Standings — the ranked results. The overall standings cover the qualifying rounds; each championship round has its own page. See Scoring.

Terminology — the words the app uses for a racing group, for the organization itself, and for a racer's own entry — "Den", "Pack" and "Car" by default, renameable install-wide or per race. See the words on screen.

Timed — the default scoring choice: each car's score is its average time, fastest average wins. See Scoring.
